High Speed Photography Trigger by ~BLPhotography:iconBLPhotography:

Ok, so as a lot of you know normally making a sound trigger if your not technical savvy with circuits can be difficult and expensive if you don't know where to get the parts.

Well i came up with a solution sure it doesn't look super professional but for at home use it works great.

parts needed:

a strobe (obviously)

scotch tape masking tape or electrical tape (this is up to you for me masking tape worked best)

Aluminum Foil (you want the light duty kind that is flimsy)

cardboard

some pennies

some insulated wire (i used some old speaker wire from my van)

wire strippers.

a speaker with a good decibel range ( my first one i made using a subwoofer speaker from my old pc speakers because it allowed me to use the trebble, bass, and volume settings on it allowing me to adjust sensitivity (im now using my talk box horn driver because it is smaller and looks more proffessional not to mention it is microphone ready))

an amp source for the speaker.

camera capable of bulb or atleast long time exposures.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

first make the contact trigger

1. take a piece of your light duty aluminum foil and tape it over your speaker make sure to leave enough foil to tape your insulated wire to it later.

2. take your piece of cardboard and cut a hole in the center of it about a 1/2 inch smaller than your speaker and tape the cardboard ontop of the aluminum foil you just taped to the speaker.

3. tape a piece of foil over the top of the hole you just cut into your cardboard (make sure it doesnt touch the piece of aluminum foil under the cardboard.)

4. take your insulated wire and cut two pieces of it to your desired length. then strip both ends of each wire.

5. tape one end of one wire to the aluminum foil under the card board and one end of the other wire to the aluminum foil above the cardboard.

6. take the other ends of your wires and tape them to the leads of your flash ( on most speedlites one lead is under the fastening knob and the other is on the bottom of the hotshoe connection)

7. Turn on the flash and push the aluminum foil together through the hole you cut when the foil touches it should complete the circuit and fire the flash.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

now to set up the sound trigger part.

1. with the contact trigger now set up over the speaker you need to hook your mic up to your amp and the amp up to the speaker.

2. you want to stack pennies on the foil and talk while adding pennies on the foil till you find the point where the vibrating foil on the bottom touches the foil on top (adjusting the volume for sensitivity).

3. once you find that point run tape over the pennies to hold them in place.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

now as far as delay you can position the mic closer or farther from the subject.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll upload some pictures of my setup when i get home. Just to prove im not bsing you guys.
